Mystique Masquerade, Theatre Bizarre, and Scarefest. Nov. 1st, 2009 @ 06:35 pm
I have had quite a weekend and last weekend too.
Last week was the Theatre Bizarre Halloween Party, and event that I have been hearing so much about for years, but this year not only attended but performed two acts. It was quite an honor to be part of this amazing show, party, and experience. It is a circus sideshow carnival halloween party, but those words can't even describe just how cool it actually is.

I performed at the Music Hall at their Mystique Masquerade Ball. A great gig that I got my first press story from. It was an elegant ball and I performed in the VIP room. There was all kinds of good food to sample from area restaurants.
I had a gorgeous new custom made costume. This is the first time I have had a costume designed and made and developed. Haley Jane, my designer and creator did a great job.

We made so many layers for this costume though, and I was worried some of the "tease" was getting lost with having to rush to get everything off in the 6 minute song. This is also the longest act I have ever developed.

Saturday was the Scarefest in Muskegon, and the premiere of the Movie Offspring. Offspring was shot in Muskegon, and a lot of the post production work was done in Farmington Hills, both Michigan cities. I went with the post production sound staff to hear their work on the big screen and was so proud of my friends.
The film will delight horror and gore movie enthusiasts. Definitely something different, and disturbing.

I was on the Tonight Show! Oct. 1st, 2009 @ 03:33 pm
So not only did I actually make it into the film, but Drew Showed a clip I was in when she visited Conan at the Tonight Show!!

Whip-It opens tomorrow and not only is it a great film, it is a great inspiration to be a girl, to have a dream, and to have it come true because of this movie about being what you dream to be.

I am in the Hot Tub Johnny party scene. I am at the party in the backround in a white T-Shirt. This was shot at like 3am at a house in Ypsilanti, MI.

A highlight of this night was photographers climbing onto the neighboring roofs trying to sneak shots of this scene.

3:36-3:50 is where I appear. Thank-you Drew!

» on tour.. kind-of
Life is a whirlwind of awesomeness.
That is my comment for lately.
Monday I shot a movie, and
I just realized I had a tour of sorts last week.
Saturday Flint, Wednesday Chicago, Saturday Detroit.
All burlesque.

and in the middle of it all I got booked as Penelope Anne Miller's Stand In for the next two weeks in Ann Arbor.
I love this. It is crazy as hell, my house is a mess, food is running low. I am packing and repacking bags every other day.
but this is it. Adventurous insanity for me. The life of an entertainer. I want more!
Please keep me busy.

Dirty Dolls Lingerie Trunk show was prety cool, although the women we tried to give little lessons to were not that receptive. I just tried to show them some basic glove moves, but they were scared to even do that. I think we caught them off guard. I had two people off my email lists stop by though. I can't wait to get some pictures or do an act in my new curvacious clevage bra, and organic cotton panties.

Last night was the Squared Circle Revue show at Theater Bizarre. Thanks to my new protege, and partner in burlesque crimes... who is actually teaching me quite a lot myself, I was able to perform at this crazy wonderful event with all my favorite entertainers, and met a few new friends.
Theater Bizarre is a gem in Detroit, a crazy insane adult playground. It is a group of houses that have set up a carnival in their backyard complete with stage, and last night a wrestling ring.
Dancing in a wrestling ring is pretty interesting. It is like theater in the round. Doing a tease that way is kinda challenging because I always think of the tease in a two fold manner. What I am showing the audience, and what I have my back to. But when you have 4 sides you are constantly giving away something to one side while holding something from another.
It is also bouncy and has ropes... Which is way more fun. It took me a second to figure how to get in and out.

Okay I have just been brought french fries, that I am going to enjoy making a ketchup soup out of.

» Whip It Trailer - the first film i worked on!
About a year ago this month my dream of all dreams started coming true.

Movies came to Michigan though a tax incentive program, and I got cast cast as Drew Barrymore's stand in on her directorial debut and super awesome movie about one of my favorite things, Roller Derby Girls.

I got to be on the set 5 days a week for about 4 weeks in a devastatingly hot and dirty warehouse loving and appreciating every single sweaty dirty moment, because I truly felt that I wasn't wasting my time anymore, this was what I wanted to do, and have wanted to do as long as I have had conscious thought.

work in movies
entertain for a living.

I am shaking and crying and calling and emailing every Detroit Derby Girl I met in the movie.
Those girls worked their asses off, and are super strong and amazing people.

I might be in a few crowd scenes as they pulled me in for a few things, but the stand in worked more as a part of the crew behind the scenes. "standing in" is really being an object to mimic the actress as the lighting gets set up, and the cameras practice their moves.

Still this is the first film I ever worked on and I am so excited and proud to have been involved with such an awesome story.

and Zoe Bell told me she liked my hair. EEK!
» Rothbury 2009
I have just returned from what has been one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.
I was blessed to be part of the Rothbury festival 2009,as part of Angela Eve's Eve's Parlor. We appeared at the Speak EZ in the Sherwood forest. Not only did I get to perform shows for three straight nights, with beautiful and talented women. I got so see a plethora of music artists, to name a few, The Black Crowes, Les Claypool, Ani Difranco, Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan.
It did not come without challenges. I have never really camped before. Four days of porta-potties, does not leave one feeling glamorous to put on a burlesque show, but I overcame my fears and doubts and did it.
Angela and her crew did a wonderful job putting together this show and and building an incredible set.
I will explain more in detail in future posts but I promised myself a nice warm bath.
» Hung
I worked on this TV show today.

look for me in Episode 7 at the Farmers market.

Episode 1 Premieres Sunday June 28th at 10pm.

HBO HUNG

» Great stuff happening this summer
I am performing at the Rothbury festival this fourth of July weekend . This is the biggest show and the best opportunity I have even given in regards to burlesque, and I am so excited. I will be with Angela Eve and Eve's Parlour or Speakeasy

It also involves some camping and roughing it, which will be a new and exciting experience.
I will be performing in nightly shows, and daily improv performances. I am going to use a bunch of acts, and talents I haven't brought into my burlesque before, such as hooping and banjo picking.

The movies are back with the better weather. I have done 2 days on The Irishman. The first as Linda Cardilini's stand in, and the next as an extra. I was costumed in 70's clothing and then 60's clothing with a beehive hairstyle.
Monday I work as an extra on the upcoming HBO series "Hung"

oh Roxi Dlite one of the most talented burlesque dancers I have worked with, was First Runner up at Ms Exotic world.. I was ecstatic to hear such good news. I know she is from Windsor, but she is a Detroit girl too, and we love having her here!

I will be appearing with Hell's Belles at the Ritz in Warren on June 20th with music acts Country Bob and the Bloodfarmers, and Queen Bee's band They Never Sleep.

June 24th I am in Chicago to perform with Eve's Parlour No Tell Motel at the Debonair Social Club. Where I will spend my XXth birthday (it is an important one).

This is going to be a great summer.

» National Burlesk Theater
The subject of me being a burlesque dancer has been a difficult one to bring up with my 70's feminist sociology major mother. I only told her about 2 years ago (out of the five I have been performing) that this was a part of my life.
I of course sent her the link for the news story about my classes... Proudly.

My grandmother and I have only just started talking about it, and she says comments like "oh feathers like Sally Rand."

On the phone today my grandmother revealed to me that she remembers her parents going to the National Theater to see burlesque shows. She remarked how odd it must been for her mom who was a small town Kentucky girl, to come up here to Detroit and see a show like that.

I looked it up. It is still standing, but like many buildings it is sitting there awaiting redevelopment.
After reading these articles I had the impression it was in an abandoned area, but then I went onto google maps street level and discovered it is in a well developed area.

"As vaudeville slowly died out and newer theaters like the Madison (opened in 1917) started showing motion pictures, the National was forced to make changes. It, too, started showing motion pictures, but the small theater couldn’t compete with the rising movie palaces such as the Michigan and United Artists theaters and quickly switched to burlesque with a live orchestra. In the 1940s, the National Burlesk Theater was advertised as “Detroit’s biggest and best” burlesque theater. The runway was lighted from beneath with multicolored panels that the dancers pranced around in their high heels. In the 1960s, evening shows would often start at 8:35 p.m. Among the women strutting their stuff were Miss Dee Dee Devine, Miss Lorelei Lee, Miss Gina Gina, Miss Linda Love, Miss Leslie Lang and Miss Ann Darling.

In an era where full nudity was not allowed, the dancers could take off only what the law would allow. This usually meant five-piece ensembles – where four of the pieces were gloves and shoes. They would twist and shimmy to the music in their underwear and heels. Between the acts, there would be comic relief, performed in the 1960s by Yakum Yakum and Buddy DeVaul. They’d act out jokes with the help of the ladies. These were done in what showbiz called blackouts, in which the lighting operators switched off the lights at the precise moment the punch line was delivered, thus cuing the laughter. The shows went on for an hour and a half, ending with the girls trooping out for a bow as the house lights came up."
» On WXYZ TV
Alicia Smith from WXYZ our ABC affiliate did a story tonight on Pole Addiction the studio I teach burlesque classes at. She was interested in burlesque too, and did a more in-depth internet report on my burlesque classes, and they shot me performing a a PG rated fan dance.

» monologue for acting class

I am taking acting classes, and we have to search down monologues.
I have often wondered when my mom and I are going to finally have a similar conversation.
It has come to something like this before.

Gypsy
written by Arthur Laurents & Leonard Spigelgass, from the book by Gypsy Rose Lee

Louise "Gypsy Rose Lee" Hovick: I said turn it off! Nobody laughs at me, because I laugh first. At me. Me from Seattle. Me with no education. Me with no talent, as you've kept reminding me my whole life! Well, Mama, look at me now. Look! Look where I live. Look at my friends. Look where I'm going. I'm not staying in burlesque, I'm moving. Maybe up maybe down. But wherever I'm going, I'm having the time of my life, because for the first time, it is my life! And I love it! I love every second of it! I am Gypsy Rose Lee! And I love her! And if you don't you can just clear out! Now!

I don't know if I should do this for acting class it is too personal...
I totally sobbed when I saw this scene.
I didn't even know that she used her Mom's name as part of her stage name too.
My sister says that is what my mom is angry about the most.

» Big News and Performing This Saturday at Detroit Erotica Ball
The Michigan Lily

So It is official. After much deliberation, Lily is staying in Michigan for at least another year.
I signed a lease on a house I am absolutely in love with today.
I am working in films, like real movies with famous people, thanks to the Michigan Film Incentives, and I have many things in the way of burlesque teaching and performing.
I am hoping to finally get to those plans of putting on my own show, and teaching a weeks series of classes since I now know where I am going to be living.
Right here in the Detroit area, and maybe Lansing and Grand Rapids too.
but hopefully I will get to travel to some new places out of state as well.

This Saturday at Detroit Erotica Ball.
